Mayor and State's Attorney Conflict

On October 20, 1915 the Pantagraph reported the apprehension of two thieves in the Evoy Building. The Evoy building was where a quantity of alcohol was being stored since the time the city was voted dry. These strangers had come to Bloomington and learned the storage location of the alcohol. After renting the premises above the storage place, the men used an elevator in the rented space to get at the alcohol. Detectives Novacek and Ostrum became wise to this caper and caught the men in the act.

The Mayor was very happy for this break in the crime spree and congratulated the Detectives on very good work. On the 21st, however, a third man was charged -- Mr. C L Freeman. Mr. Freeman was not a stranger to this town and his father, a prominent man (although unnamed man) in Bloomington, appeared in court on his son's behalf and offered to do whatever was necessary to get his son out of trouble. State's Attorney Miles K Young thereupon dropped the charges against all three men, enraging the Mayor. The Mayor was NOT mollified when Mr. Young called to make his excuses that evening.
