Freshmen Get Haircuts

At this time of year one hundred years ago the Pantagraph reported several assaults by upperclassmen against freshmen. A favorite hazing ritual was surprise haircuts. The upperclassmen would discover where the freshmen were having a party and at the end of the evening they would ambush the freshmen with scissors and chop at their hair. On October 28, 1915 the Wesleyan freshmen had travelled to Lexington to have a party. The Pantagraph called Lexington the "Still City" -- and I do not believe they meant the quiet city. Alcohol would be a necessary factor in the success of the ambush.

Earlier in October the Pantagraph reported another haircut ambush and did not greet that occurrence with mirth as it did this one. On October 20, 1915 the Leroy seniors ambushed the freshmen and played several pranks on them as well as cutting the hair of two young men. The Lexington teachers investigated and several seniors were suspended from school. The actions were condemned as disgraceful. The parents were highly indignant and complained to the school of this incident. Perhaps the Pantagraph found such pranks less amusing when instigated against such young boys.
