He Followed his Dream

On this date 100 years ago Thurlow Brewer was seeking his fame on the silver screen. He went to the Essanay Studios in Chicago and doggedly held a spot outside the manager's office. Eventually he was given a minor role and then he helped the wardrobe man. He took some minor parts but he had a credited role in "The Papered Door." He also had an opportunity in "The River of Romance" which was partly filmed at Starved Rock.

His love of dramatics began when working with his father, who was a director with the Fort Dramatic Company of Atkinson, Wisconsin. (Professionally, his father was a physician) He also enjoyed success at the Edwin Booth Dramatic Club at the Wisconsin University.

IMDB credits Thurlow with five pictures: "the Papered Door," "The Double Cross," "Phantom Buccaneer," "A Man's Work" and "Burning the Candle."

Although the Pantagraph claims him as a Bloomingtonian, he was born in Evanston and lived in Madison and Fort Atkinson Illinois most of his life, although he did live in Bloomington in 1919, just long enough to be listed in the city directory. The 1914-1915 Sigma Chi Fraternity Alumni Quarterly announced that Thurlow and his brothers had moved their business to Bloomington: Dr. Brewer Medicine Company.
