Better Understanding of Associated Charities

The Associated Chartities were campaigning for more funds in December and explained on this date one hundred years ago just what it was that the Axxociated Charities did. They were anxious to put down any rumors that they merely went from house to house handing out goods and fuel. A careful examination was made of each family that received help from the Associated Charities. The AC was anxious for the public to know that the suitability of each family to receive charity was foremost in the mind of the AC. An unworthy person -- a criminal, a prostitute, an unmarried mother, or a drunkard would not be the recipient of the generosity of the Associated Charities.

They gave as an example a family of 7 where the father had lost his job and was also a sufferer of tuberculosis. The AC made inquiries of different business men of the area and found work for this man. They also caused the nurse of the tuberculosis society called on the family and gave the type of care necessary for this man. They looked at the children and decided that some of them needed their adenoids removed, resulting in a great change in the children. The AC did provide some material things, such as house furnshings to make the hoe more comfortable and fuel, btu they would be quick to point out that the job and medical help was much more important to the family.

The article went on to name those who had given to the AC, either anonymously or by name. Some potential donors could be influenced by the example of other donors and publicizing those names could mean many more dollars to the Associated Charities.
