Julius and Juliet

Julius Sandoz immigrated to Illinois in 1904 from Cortebert Switzerland, a French speaking part of that country. According to the Pantagraph, he had left behind a sweetheart in Switzerland, Juliet Callamb, when he came to America in 1904 (Juliet would have been twelve at that time).

Julius worked as a farm hand on farms in McLean County, first on the farm of Mark Hastings and then on the farm of Edward Kissinger. He spoke English according to the census records and he successfully passed the examination for citizenship in 1914, three years after Juliet arrived in the United States.

Julius and Juliet married February 26, 1916 and made their home on the Hastings farm. Julius was 36 years old and Juliet was 25. Whether the Pantagraph was correct in stating that they had a romantic relationship before leaving Switzerland is a little dubious, since Julius was 23 and Juliet was just 12 years old.

Julius was 50 years old when he committed suicide on the Kissinger farm. Juliet said that he had threatened to kill himself many times, and the reason he gave was that he should die before he was too old to work. The paper stated that Julius was about 60 years old, so perhaps he appeared much older than his age and his life had simply been too hard.At the time of Julius' death in October 1930, he had just two survivors, Juliet and a brother Albert in North Dakota. It must have been a lonely life for this couple who lived on a farm as a hand and a servant. They never had any children, and no record of the continuation of Juliet's life is found. I pity poor Juliet, left alone with out kith or kin in a strange country.
