Louis Leroy, Orphan Train Rider


Louis Leroy (1887 - 1959) was sent to Illinois in 1897 when he was 10 years old. In 1900 he was living with Calvin and Minnie Quillen on a farm near Edford, IL. Although he was only 13, and guardians were required to provide their charges with an education, Louis had not attended school in the year before the census. The census reporter recorded that Louis' parents were French and that Louis was born in the United States. In 1910 Louis was 23 and was living with a different family near Edford. Arthur and Abbey Smith, his employers were a very young couple with one young son.

Louis served during WWI in a machine gun unit, according to his grave marker. Louis never married and died at the age of 75 in 1959.
