Mabel Van Winkle, DeKalb County

Mabel Van Winkle came to Hinckley, Illinois in 1887 and settled in with the Baie family very contentedly. She continued to live with them for at least eleven years. Mabel was the child of John H and Jeanette Van Winkle. He was born in New York and was a "truck" driver there in 1880. Jeanette was born in Canada and was noted as being ill with pleurisy at the time of the census. Mabel was born in July of 1879.

Mabel was not the only child taken in by the Baie family. In 1900 a five year old girl was also living with the Baies, and she was called "Alice Baie" in the census.

No further record of Mabel's life was found in DeKalb County, so it is unknown whether she ever married or had children. She did not appear in the 1920 census with the Baie family.
