Mary Loretta Broland, Piatt County
Mary Loretta Broland came to Illinois in 1860, where she was placed in Piatt County with William Webster, with whom she stayed throughout her indenture, despite the fact that she was deprived of an education. Her parents were from France, and she asked in her 1880 letter whether the Asylum could locate any of her family in New York. She had been married for 12 years and had not yet had a child, so she asked for a young girl to come live with her and her husband. But in the census of 1900, Mary Loretta and her husband, David Brufett had a 16 year old daughter. Helene or Lena married John A Swanberg, a coal mine manager in Danville, and her parents lived in Champaign, where her father was a farmer. Unfortunately, Lena's husband was one of the victims of the Spanish flu and died in 1918, leaving her alone with their four children. Apparently her her husband was able to adequately provide for his family, because in 1920 Lena was living with her three living children with the assistance of a live-in housekeeper. She remarried to Otis Berry, an investment banker some time after 1920.
Mary Loretta Broland died April 29, 1944 in Urbana, Illinois. Her daughter died in Los Angeles in 1949, the mother of four children.
