Washington Street Residents
As one of the oldest streets in the neighborhood, Washington Street saw great changes by 1914. Many houses were built after the turn of the century and large lots were being subdivided. Arthur PIllsbury built a dozen houses on Washington before 1914. For a short time, Arthur Moratz lived on Washington Street. Louis Stevenson, the son of Vice President Adlai Stevenson, was the Illinois Secretary of State and lived at 1316 E. Washington. Besides the many lawyers and manufacturers living on Washington, there were shoe salesmen, a photographer and bridge contractors! During World War I, the McMurray family had three sons fighting in the war: James, Francis and Harry. Attorney Dwight Beal also served in the war.
