A farm wife, Mrs. Burroughs, living near Mossville, was making bread in her home and after completing this chore, could not find her diamond ring. A thorough search was made, the police were notified and the MAID was questioned. But not being "colored" no suspicions arose against her.
It was days later when Mr. Burroughs accidentally wounded one of their chickens as he cut oats in a field nearby. Since the bird had to be killed, he took it home for Mrs. Burroughs to dress. Imagine her surprise when cleaning the organs of the bird she found the diamond from her ring! The band was missing but she recognized the stone.
No one could explain how the ring came to be where the chicken could get it or how the stone separated from the setting.
